Carl Eric Schubert
On September 14, 2023, after a 83-year journey on Earth, father, husband, grandfather, uncle and friend Carl Eric Schubert passed away peacefully. Carl began his journey on June 27, 1940 in Brooklyn. He spent the later days of his childhood on Long Island, where he enjoyed learning about the outdoors with his father Carl (a passion he carried on with his own children). He earned a ROTC scholarship to attend Columbia University, playing on the Lions football team. After graduating (Class of 1962), he joined the Navy, where he served aboard the submarines USS Sea Dragon, USS Alexander Hamilton, and USS Nathan Hale, retiring at the rank of Lt. Commander. Carl continued his travels after leaving the Navy. He attended the University of Miami where he earned his PhD in Oceanography. With this career, Dr. Schubert was able to continue to travel the world, expanding his journey to over 80 countries. While visiting the exotic city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he met Marilyn Marie Follstaedt, who he promptly made his wife on April 15, 1977. The happy couple saw the birth of three children: Lindsey Elizabeth, Evan Eric, and Clay Jordan. Shortly after the family was complete, Carl moved them across the country to Irvine, California where he worked as an environmental engineer. Carl was a devoted father, teaching his three children how to be kind, thoughtful and mature. He supported his children’s interests by attending their water polo games, boy scout camping trips, and school awards. He made sure that every night, the whole family would gather for a meal (often with delicious recipes he picked up on his travels) and share about their days. Carl and his beloved wife (who he lovingly referred to as his bride) always made sure the meal was open to their children’s friends and family friends. Upon successfully seeing his three children graduate from UCSD, UCLA, and UCD, Carl retired to spend time completing crossword puzzles, playing card and board games with family and friends, going for walks, and taking the family dog to the dog park where he would cheerfully befriend strangers and regale them with stories.. Not even a cancer diagnosis in 2000 could slow down his love for life. Carl also continued his love of traveling with his wife, visiting places like Austria, Alaska, and MLB Spring Training in Arizona.
Sadly, Carl’s long adventure on this Earth ended after a struggle with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his three children, Lindsey, Evan and Clay, two daughters-in-law, Amanda and Sarah, grandson Jackson, granddaughter Ella, nieces Kristen and Kaia and nephew Erik. His compassion, wit, wisdom, love, and desire to do right by the world has shaped his family and will be missed by his friends. Their own adventures carry on his legacy.
