Joy Stockwell passed away in Laguna Hills, CA after battling breast, bone and spinal cancer for over 3 years.
Joy Stockwell was born in Los Angeles, CA to Sylvia and Harold Kolko. While growing up in Granada Hills CA, she completed her high school education, enjoying her time by singing in a trio called The Page Girls with her friends Gayla and Char. She married her first love, Mike Stockwell, in 1957 and had two children, Charlene Kay and Dean Kent at the ages of 18 and 19.
In the early 60’s, the entire family moved to New Zealand, where Mike’s parents and brother lived. After 18 months, the family decided to move back to the United States to Costa Mesa, CA to pursue better work opportunities for Mike. In the later 60’s, the family moved to Fountain Valley, CA, where both of the kids graduated high school. Joy ended up staying in Fountain Valley for the next 50 years, during which time she was divorced from Mike and had an 8 year marriage toBob McElravy. She worked at the Sand Crab beauty salon in Huntington Beach, while also being an aerobics fitness instructor for the city of Huntington Beach.
During these years, she became interested in interior decorating and went to school, earning both her B General Contracting and C15 flooring and floor covering licenses in 1988. After earning her licenses, she built her own flooring business, Joys Spectrum Interiors, Inc. She worked in the flooring industry for the next 25 years until she retired to spend more time with her family.
Joy was kind to all and demonstrated this with her generosity. She had a deep love for animals, having many pets throughout her life. She was beautiful inside and out, always smiling and full of laughter. During her retirement years, Mimi, as she became known by her family, enjoyed spending time with all of them, especially her 5 grand-children and 5 great grandchildren. She loved crocheting Afghans for all of her little grand & great grandchildren, so much so she made one for each and every one of them. She was also extremely proud that all of her children and grandchildren earned college degrees and are successful in life.
Joy is survived by her son and daughter, Dean and Charlene, daughter and son in laws Rachel and Scott, 5 grand-children, Cameron, Kaity, Jennifer, Sean and Erin, 5 great-grandchildren, Daniel, Nathan, Norah, Amelia and Audrey, her brother Tim Tipton, nieces Ann Ingram, Cheryl Houy and her husband John. Additionally, nephews Bill Cross, Doug Stockwell, Brian Tipton and Matt Tipton. Joy was preceded in death by her sister Shelly Cross and brother in law Johnny Cross.
Joy was a wonderful mother to her children and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother to the little ones. She constantly talked about her family being her pride and joy and loved them all very much. Joy had a huge heart and her presence will be sorely missed, not just by family, but friends as well.
Joy was a devout Christian and gained peace knowing she would be going home to her Lord and Savior.
Rest in Peace Mimi.
