In Loving Memory of Marie HughesSeptember 10, 1944 – May 26, 2026
Marie Hughes was born on September 10, 1944, to Alfred and Lucy Burigo in The Bronx, New York. Raised and educated in the Bronx, she carried throughout her life the values of faith, humility, kindness, and devotion that would come to define her character.
She later married the love of her life, David Hughes, on May 29, 1966, and together they built a family grounded in love, faith, and mutual respect. Marie was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a source of unwavering support to those fortunate enough to know her.
At the center of Marie’s life was her deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. Her relationship with God guided her actions, shaped her character, and provided a quiet strength that touched everyone around her. She lived her faith not through grand gestures, but through the simple and consistent example of a life marked by compassion, grace, and selflessness.
Marie’s greatest earthly joy was her family. She was looking forward to celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary with the love of her life, her husband Dave. They lovingly raised their two children, Stacy and Joseph, who were the pride and joy of her life. She celebrated their accomplishments, supported them through life’s challenges, and cherished every moment spent with them. Her love for her family knew no bounds.
Never one to seek attention or recognition, Marie nevertheless left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She believed that actions spoke louder than words, and her life was a testament to that belief. Through her gentle spirit, warm smile, and caring heart, she quietly enriched the lives of friends, neighbors, and loved ones.
Cheerful, loving, welcoming, faithful, and kind-hearted are only a few of the words that begin to tell Marie’s story. She possessed a rare ability to make others feel valued and loved. Her presence brought comfort, her encouragement brought hope, and her example inspired those around her to be better people.
As we remember Marie, we give thanks for a life beautifully lived and a legacy that continues through the family she cherished and the countless lives she touched. Though she will be deeply missed, we take comfort in the promise of Scripture:
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”— Matthew 25:23
Marie’s life reflected that faithfulness. Her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved her, and her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those she leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Fund at kidneyfund.org
