Robert Avrohm Cohen

February 11, 1959 — April 3, 2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Avrohm Cohen of San Clemente, California on Saturday, April 3, 2021 after a 3-year battle with cancer.  He leaves behind the love of his life and soulmate, Ruth Fernholz Cohen after 19 years of marriage.  Theirs was a special and intended love found later in life.  Rob would surely say that his love for Ruth was the best part of his far too short 62 years. The son of Stan and Sally (Sara) Cohen, Rob grew up in Toms River, New Jersey where as a young child, he worked with his brothers, Jeffrey, David and Barry in the family business, The Suburban Fireplace and Garden Center. Rob is a graduate of the University of Jacksonville and had a successful forty-year career in the biotech industry which eventually brought him to California (along with a constant chase for better surf). An avid surfer, Rob could be found most days in the water at “Rivi” (Riviera Beach) during his years living in the Riviera District of San Clemente.  Most recently, he fell in love with the point break of Doheny State Beach and paddle surfed daily.  Rob’s love of water and snow sports took him traveling around the world with his dear Ruth.   Rob was a natural athlete, originally excelling at basketball, and enjoyed many other sports recreationally including mountain biking, running, pilates, spinning, hiking, golfing and swimming.  He’s had an active lifestyle where he enjoyed the finer things of life-- prized wines, fine dining, playing black jack and fast cars (and keeping them clean and cared for).  He loved his neighbors and friends as family and endeared them with his humor, superior grilling capabilities and strong yet tender touch and embrace.  He additionally leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Dorian (Gary) Cohen Kershner, Joel (Lauren) Cohen, Jen (Jason) Fernholz Morris, Kelly (Bret) Fernholz Andersen, Patricia Bichler and Maureen Bichler with whom he had deep and meaningful relationships.  His impact was great and his passing leaves a large void in this close family unit of cousins.  Rob also enjoyed spending time with his 10 great nieces be it at the beach or swimming in the back-yard pool. Along with Ruth, Rob owned and rescued many Weimaraners (Cooper, Monty, Annie, Luna, Hurley and Hunter). In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to California Weimaraner Education and Rescue, an organization that Rob wholeheartedly loved and supported. https://www.calwear.org
