William Douglas Deutsch

July 7, 1941 — June 19, 2023

William Douglas “Doug” Deutsch, 81 passed away on June 19th, 2023 shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Doug, was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Linda, who passed away on January 10, 2019. Doug is survived by his son Michael Deutsch and his wife Lisa, daughter Kelly Swartzbaugh and her husband Scott, son Tim Deutsch and his wife Traci, daughter Kari Gass and her husband Dan, his sister Jeani Scott and her husband Rob and his brother Bill and his wife Becky. He also had eleven grandchildren – Devin, Katy, Cory, Maddisen, Garrett, Blake, Jordan, Lindsey, Holly, Brady and Luke and three great granddaughters – Sophie, Suki and Claire.

Doug married Linda Jean Beilharz on April 28, 1962. They started their family in the Alhambra/San Gabriel area of Los Angeles County, before moving to Costa Mesa in 1972, where they have resided since. Doug worked as a salesman in both the flooring and steel industries before pursuing his dream of being a Major League Baseball (MLB) Scout. He worked as a Professional Scout with the Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals for almost 26 years beginning December 1, 1983 to his retirement on October 31, 2009. Doug loved coaching and watching youth sports, especially those that his children and grandchildren were involved with from their youth through college. He was also a mentor to many scouts, an advisor to many players and a recruiter for many coaches. He always wanted what was best for you as an individual, regardless if you were his son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, friend, neighbor, player, coach, colleague, etc. Besides his love for Linda, his family and athletics, he was a very passionate and devout Catholic who enjoyed his friendship and fellowship with those around him at church, bible study and men’s group activities. He will be remembered for his great smile, optimistic persona, loving demeanor and his compassionate care and concern for all he met.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Doug’s name to his favorite charity, Caring for Children, an orphanage in the small village of San Antonio de las Minas, Mexico. Doug enjoyed his trips to the orphanage and treasured getting to know the staff and children who lived there. https://cbcchildren.org/donate/
